With the Bells On

With the Bells On

December 8, 2022
Everyone’s excited about Christmas in Edgartown – especially our furry friends who plan to participate in the Holiday Dog Show on Sunday. Perhaps instead of antlers, you’re planning to don that charming holiday sweater or a Santa hat for the parade on Saturday.
But even if jogging in the Holiday Hustle 5K or making a wreath at Donaroma’s doesn’t fit your schedule, you can revel in the festivities with dinner at Bettini, cocktails at the Vineyard Preservation Trust Holiday Party or a seat at one of the two Minnesingers Holiday Concerts at the Old Whaling Church this weekend. There are simple ways to contribute to the weekend’s fundraising for nonprofits, too; Edgartown Patrolman’s Association Stuff-a-Bus and the Teddy Bear Suite are just two. And don’t miss Friday evening’s Lighting of the Edgartown Lighthouse at 6 p.m. sharp. Gather at Memorial Wharf beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Keep an eye out for the Vineyard Gazette’s red truck in the parade on Saturday. Stop by The Carnegie Heritage Center afterwards to take a holiday photo with the classic 1955 Chevy and grab a cup of cocoa or cider.
Christmas in Edgartown events officially begin today – Thursday, Dec. 8 — and run through Sunday, Dec. 11. You can find details on each activity on The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar and on the Christmas in Edgartown website.
And be sure to take advantage of the Holiday Catalog inserted into your print edition of the Vineyard Gazette this week – there are loads of valuable coupons for holiday shopping at local businesses!
On Saturday, Dec. 10 at 12:55 p.m., the MV Film Society offers the latest broadcast in the Met Opera Live series. A performance of the world premiere production of The Hours, featuring Renee Fleming, Joyce DiDonato and Kelli O’Hara and based on Michael Cunningham’s novel, will be shown. The screening is at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven.
The Aquinnah Artisans Holiday Fair on Saturday, Dec. 10 and Sunday, Dec. 11 features more than 20 artisans — many of them Wampanoag — plus a show of children’s art and a craft table. Food is available for purchase. The event is at Aquinnah Town Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
The Workshop Gallery in Vineyard Haven is now open for the holiday season on Thursdays through Saturdays from 1 to 6 p.m. Meet the artists, check out their work, and take advantage of the opportunity to purchase directly from the artists.
Ever want to understand what you’re looking at in the skies on clear winter nights? Mark Alan Lovewell can help. Join his Stargazing class at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 5:30 p.m. Register in advance.
The Chilmark Library’s Big Book Sale has begun and runs through Thursday, Dec. 29. You can’t beat the prices!
The Annual West Tisbury Library Holiday Party is on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The library also has two new art exhibits. Check out There and Back Again, the new exhibit by Kanta Lipsky in the Community Room. Meet the artist at a reception today, Thursday, Dec. 8, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Artwork by Cody Jephcote can be seen in the upper and lower level display cases. An opening reception with the artist will be on Sunday, Dec. 11 from 12 to 2 p.m.
