Music in the Air

Music in the Air

December 1, 2022
December first already! The month is going to fly by in a whir and blur of activities, so why not pause for a moment to ring in the season with a holiday concert? You can start tonight: The annual Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Winter Concert begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center. This free event features many of the performing arts ensembles at the high school: First Year Chorus, Vocal Ensemble, Minnesingers, Orchestra, Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble and the MV Big Band.
Next, you’ll want to make plans to hear The Island Community Chorus at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown on either the evening of Saturday, Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. or on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 3 p.m. This year’s annual holiday concert will be led for the first time by new music director Bill Peek.
And if you’re thinking of heading up-Island on Sunday, consider an early evening concert (5 p.m.) at the Chilmark Community Church. Island artists and musicians will perform music celebrating the hope, joy and peace of the holiday season in this Offering of Music and Light.
Once the music gets you in the spirit, take your pick from festive events and activities below or visit The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for a regularly updated list of Island happenings.
The last First Friday of 2022 will be held this week! On Friday, Dec. 2 at 5 p.m., the Martha’s Vineyard Museum will host the artisan vendors, musicians and food purveyors from the popular festival that occurs in Owen Park during warmer months. A special attraction for this holiday-themed event is the lighting of the museum’s flag pole — and marshmallow roasting for s’mores outside.
The Barn, Bowl & Bistro in Oak Bluffs is holding a Paint Night on Friday, Dec. 2 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Create a canvas masterpiece to take home with you while enjoying food and drinks. This event is for ages 21 and up.
Head to Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury on Saturday, Dec. 3 for holiday and wintertime nature crafts during its Holiday Wreath Celebration. Join the staff and other community members to decorate the large evergreen wreath that will light the arboretum’s Far Barn. This free event takes place from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m.
On Sunday, Dec. 4 from 1 to 3 p.m., the Land Bank will hold a free guided natural history walk from its Fulling Mill Brook Preserve to the Peaked Hill Reservation. Participants are asked to meet at the Fulling Mill Brook Preserve trailhead off Middle Road at 1 p.m.
On Wednesday, Dec. 7, Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse in Vineyard Haven celebrates the artists of Vineyard Independence Partnership and the artwork they have created for a new exhibit at the playhouse. An opening reception runs from 4 to 5 p.m. The exhibit will be on display through Jan. 28 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons.
