A Fall Reprieve

A Fall Reprieve

September 22, 2022
Today is the first day of fall, at least officially: The autumn equinox occurs at 9:03 p.m. But though the first pumpkins and local apples are popping up at Island farm stands, the Vineyard gets a languorous reprieve from the change of seasons. Rather than tumbling abruptly into fall, we segue gently as the warm ocean water surrounding us gives the air temps a boost and keeps our world more green than gold. That doesn’t mean the calendar stands still, of course.
Rosh Hashanah begins on Sunday night with a special service at the Tabernacle. The first home game of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School football team happens Friday night at 6 p.m. Crowds gather at Derby headquarters every night. And birds of every feather alight on the Island on their way south. To make the most of these days, visit The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar and check out highlights below.
Get a chance to vote on the best short film out of ten finalists in the 25thannual Manhattan Short Film Festival. Tickets are available to screenings at the MV Film Center on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m.
The Vineyard Haven Library’s 25th annual 5K fundraiser takes place on Sunday, Sept. 25. Walk the West Chop loop, which includes passing the lighthouse. A kids fun run is also available, as is a virtual version. Meet at the library at 9:45 a.m.
Here’s something worth getting up early for: the Fifth Annual Darkness into Light Suicide Prevention and Awareness Walk takes place this Saturday, Sept. 24. The goal is to raise awareness of the challenges of depression, mental illness and suicide. Meet at Bend in the Road Beach in Edgartown at 5 a.m.
Get a closer look at an Island favorite by taking a tour of the Flying Horses carousel. Rides aren’t available but you can learn the history of America’s oldest carousel and take close-up photos of the vintage horses. Tours are available weekdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Get your chic freak on at The Ritz Cafe on Monday, Sept. 26 at a Disco Party. The Ritz will open at 7 p.m. and DJ AP spins tunes starting at 10 p.m.
