Talk of the Town

Talk of the Town

September 8, 2022
With the start of the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby set to begin at 12:01 on Sunday morning, suddenly tide tables and weather forecasts are the talk of the town (all six towns, in fact). The Harvest moon is full on Saturday night, too. Whether or not you’re fishing – or planning to fly a kite in this weekend’s Martha’s Vineyard Wind Festival – likely you’ve got an eye on the September sky, planning your outdoor activities while days are still warm and evening sunlight lingers.
It’s a perfect weekend to walk the Island Folk Pottery Sculpture Trail, take a guided tour of historic Edgartown, or cruise around the Chilmark Flea Market. Once the sun sets, take in one of the films in this year’s International Film Festival. And don’t miss Billy Collins reading his poetry at Featherstone tonight at 6:30 p.m.
As always, you can find a regularly updated list of activities and events on The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar.
At 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9 the Martha’s Vineyard Museum hosts a screening of Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America. The film features Jeffrey Robinson’s groundbreaking talk on the history of anti-Black racism in the United States. Kyle Williams of A Long Talk will lead a discussion afterwards.
Felix Neck holds the last of its seasonal Moonrise Kayak Tours this Friday, Sept. 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Watch the moon rise as you tour Sengekontacket Pond with a knowledgeable field guide. Pre-registration required.
The annual Aquinnah Wampanoag Powwow takes place at the Aquinnah Circle on Saturday, Sept. 10 and Sunday, Sept. 11 starting at 10 a.m. each day. Experience Wampanoag cultural traditions including music and dance, purchase art from local vendors and enjoy the food.
Go fly a kite at the Martha’s Vineyard Wind Festival in Ocean Park on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This annual favorite features kite making workshops, music and prizes for all ages.

A delightful romantic comedy, Burning Patience takes place in peaceful Isla Negra, Chile, where young Mario learns about life and love while delivering the mail to one of the world’s greatest poets, Pablo Neruda. Burning Patience is based on Antonio Skármeta’s acclaimed book El cartero de Neruda, which was made into the Academy Award winning foreign film, Il Postino (1994).

Tickets are available online and at the door. Wednesdays & Fridays are Locals’ Nights. Year-round residents pay only $30! Every night, RUSH tickets are available for $25 (cash only) after 7 p.m.
It’s Derby Season! The 77th annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby starts at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11. Register, get your pin and pick your favorite spot to fish and enjoy the Island’s beauty. The Derby runs through Oct. 15.
If water isn’t your natural habitat, you can celebrate the spirit by visiting the Bass in the Grass art installation on Main street in Edgartown. The fish-themed artworks are all for sale and proceeds support the Edgartown Board of Trade’s Derby Scholarship Fund. Keep an eye out for the Gazette-sponsored work created by Oak Bluffs-based artist Janice Frame. Bass in the Grass will be in place Sept. 11 through 30.
