Jewel in the Crown

Jewel in the Crown

September 1, 2022

Down-shifting into September, we’re grateful for a degree of stillness, for a few empty parking spaces, for ripening beach plums, for that chance to take an after-work swim or an early morning hike. September, with its brash blue skies, firey red tomatoes and luminous fields of goldenrod and Queen Anne’s lace, is the jewel in the Vineyard’s crown. If you’re here, enjoy every minute you can outside, then dive into a line-up of films, music, shows, and events that keep the spirit of summer rolling on, albeit with a bit less fanfare. As always, be sure to check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for a regularly updated schedule of events.

Film buffs have a bevy of big-screen options this week and next. This Friday, Sept. 2, at 7:30 p.m., a special screening of the award-winning film Jack London’s Martin Eden at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center will include an introduction and post-film discussion by director Jay Craven. Watch the trailer here.
Showing at the Martha’s Vineyard Drive-In (at the YMCA) on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 6:30 p.m. is Spider-Man: No Way Home.
And on Tuesday, Sept. 6, The International Film Festival kicks off at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center and runs through Sunday, Sept. 11.
The Vineyard Artisans Labor Day Weekend Festival — the 27th  annual staging of the largest art show on the Island – begins at the Ag Hall in West Tisbury on Friday night, Sept. 2, with a preview from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Show hours on Saturday and Sunday will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A $2 parking fee is a donation to the Vineyard Artisans Scholarship Fund.
At the other end of the Island, the Oak Bluffs Art District Stroll on Dukes County avenue is happening on Saturday, Sept. 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. Galleries will swing open their doors to showcase new work, artist pop-ups, and lively entertainment. Maps will be provided.
Artist Elizabeth R. Whelan will reveal nine new portraits of inspiring Island women on Saturday, Sept. 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Stina Sayre Design on Main street in Vineyard Haven. Whelan and Sayre have teamed up to create this special exhibit called Inspiration, which includes a portrait of Francine Kelly, former executive director for Featherstone Center for the Arts, that will be unveiled at 5 p.m.
The Federated Church of Edgartown is offering a rare opportunity to tour the historic Mayhew Parsonage at 75 South Water street in Edgartown on Sunday, Sept. 4 from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
If you’re in Edgartown on Saturday, stop by the Cooke House & Legacy Gardens at 51 School street between noon and 4 p.m. for their “Fall Into History” afternoon, which includes guided tours of the house and gardens and a simple handcraft project.
On Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 5:30 p.m., botanist and urban gardening expert Wambui Ippolito, who won the Best in Show award at the 2021 Philadelphia Flower Show, will visit Polly Hill Arboretum to lead Immigrant Landscapes, a discussion about immigrant footprints through the American landscape. Pre-registration is advised.
