Stretching Summer

Stretching Summer

August 25, 2022

Just like that, the big week — the Fair, the Fireworks, Illumination Night — is over. Between now and Labor Day lies a sweet spot, a week of August to claim as you like — to paddle a kayak, visit an art show, head to the drive-in (Jurassic Park!), take a meadow wagon ride or tour Polly Hill. Maybe you’ve got tickets to the Beach Road Weekend music festival, but if you don’t there are dozens of other live music options this weekend. Check out the movie listings, and mark your calendar for the Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 6 to Sept. 11 this year. For more events this weekend and in the coming weeks, be sure to check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar.

Tonight — Thursday, August 25 — at 7:15 p.m., Barnyard Movie Night returns to Katama. The Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival and the FARM Institute will team up for a special screening of the film Babe. Visit with the pigs and piglets and then watch the film in the People Pasture. Pre-registration is encouraged.
Beach Road Weekend, the three-day music festival in Veterans Memorial Park, begins tomorrow, Friday, August 26 and goes through Sunday, August 28. This year’s performers include Beck, Wilco, Livingston Taylor, The Avett Brothers, Emmylou Harris and others. Three-day passes are sold out, but limited day passes are still available.
Not going to the Beach Road event? You can still enjoy great music outdoors. Featherstone Fridays ends its summer-long series on Friday, August 26 with Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish at 6 p.m.
At Drumming on the Beach on Tuesday, August 30, join Rhythm of Life at State Beach in Edgartown at 6 p.m. for drumming and dancing. See our listing below for more live music.
AIRE MV, a group of artists who practice plein air painting, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with an exhibit of works at Old Sculpin Gallery in Edgartown. The exhibit opens on Saturday, August 27 and you can meet the artists at an opening reception on Sunday, August 28 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Starting on Monday, August 29, Liz Dolan Durkee from the Martha’s Vineyard Commission will be visiting local libraries to present the Vineyard Climate Action Plan. Public meetings are being held at the Edgartown Library (August 29. 3 p.m.), Chilmark Library (August 30, 3 p.m.) and the Oak Bluffs Library (August 31, 10 a.m.).
