Ice Cream Cones & Beach Umbrellas: Island Time, July 21

Ice Cream Cones & Beach Umbrellas: Island Time, July 21

July 21, 2022

With the heat wave sliding up the East Coast and enveloping the Island, ice cream cones and beach umbrellas will be imperative this weekend! Plan to make the most of cooler evenings with a beach walk, a ride up to the Cliffs for shopping and sunset-watching, and a trip to the Vineyard Drive-In to screen Jaws (yes!). Take in an outdoor (or indoor) performance at the Tisbury Amphitheater or the MV Playhouse. And find many more cool things to do below and on the The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar.

Everyone’s favorite shark movie is back: Jaws will be on the big screen at The Vineyard’s Drive-In at the YMCA on Saturday, July 23. Marine conservation activist Wendy Benchley, whose husband Peter wrote the book that the movie is based on, will introduce the film. Gates open at 7:15 p.m. and the film starts around 8:15 p.m.
Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE, A Dance Company will perform at the MV Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 23. They’ll be combining traditional African dance with modern choreography and spoken word.
The 44th annual Possible Dreams Auction, hosted by Seth Meyers, is happening on Sunday, July 24 at Winnetu Oceanside Resort in Edgartown. Tickets for the live event have sold out, but you can register to participate online and bid on 39 silent auction items. The auction will be live-streamed.
Legacy Week, also known as HBCU Week, kicks off on Sunday, July 24 at Flavors MV in Oak Bluffs. Throughout the week, discussions, social gatherings and fundraisers will be held at various locations in support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. For a complete list of events, check the Legacy Week full schedule.
If you’re looking for new paths to explore, join the Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation staff at 9 a.m. on Tuesday July 26 for a hike through Brookside Ridge Preserve in Chilmark. A guide will lead a walk over rocky terrain and through groves of beech trees.
Next Thursday (July 28) from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., celebrate the annual kiln opening at Merry Farm Pottery. There will be studio tours, pottery for show and sale and treats: made-to-order crepes from Santosha Farms.
Union Chapel is hosting a series of free concerts this summer on Wednesdays at noontime. On Wednesday, July 27, take a break from the heat, and drop in to listen to Johnny Hoy and Delanie Pickering.
