Fireworks!: Island Time, June 30

Fireworks!: Island Time, June 30

June 30, 2022

Well, hello, Fourth of July weekend! We’re ready for you. Bring on the houseguests, fire up the grill, grab a spot to watch the parade. While the parade and the fireworks in Edgartown will close out the holiday weekend on Monday, there’s plenty to do before and after that. If you’re a live music fan, you’re in luck; more than 20 shows are happening this weekend (see listings below). There are dozens of art shows to explore and guided tours to take. For more ideas on things to see and do, take a look at our highlights. Then be sure to check out The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar, updated daily.

On Saturday, June 2, The Island Community Chorus will present a free concert at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs. This year the annual salute to the Fourth will also honor director Peter Boak’s 25 years of leading the choir. The Island Community Chorus Holiday Concert runs from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Enjoy a cast that includes local actors in the MV Playhouse production of Shakespeare’s classic tale, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Directed by MJ Bruder Munafo, performances begin this Saturday, July 2, at 6 p.m. at the Tisbury Amphitheater at the Tashmoo Overlook and run through Tuesday, July 26.
The Federated Church revives its annual tradition of a live reading of Frederick Douglass’s speech What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?, which was first delivered in Rochester, New York in 1852. The reading begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 2.
On Saturday, July 2, at 3 p.m., join a guided tour of Mytoi, the peaceful Japanese-influenced garden on Chappaquiddick, home to flowering shrubs, curved paths and calm waters. Pre-register for Saturday’s Mytoi Meander, or plan to join the tour on Wednesday, July 6.
At 5 p.m on Monday, July 4, The Edgartown Fourth of July Parade gets underway from the Edgartown School and will make its way down Main street. Arrive early to find a good viewing spot and consider traveling to Edgartown by bus. If you drive, take advantage of the Edgartown Park and Ride, which is located on Dark Woods Road behind Edgartown Pizza.
Be sure to stay in Edgartown for the start of the fireworks at 9 p.m.
Senator Raphael Warnock visits the Island next week as part of the Martha’s Vineyard Author Series at the Chilmark Community Center on Thursday, July 7. He’ll be in conversation with activist Barbara Phillips to discuss his new memoir A Way Out of No Way. The event begins at 7 p.m.
