Pride and Party: Island Time, June 9

June 9, 2022
From the Pride Parade on Saturday afternoon to The Best of the Vineyard Party on Wednesday evening, the Vineyard will be nothing if not festive for the next several days. Get dressed up and have some fun, soak up the live music and support your Island friends and businesses. Don’t forget to grab your market bag on Saturday morning: the first West Tisbury Farmers’ Market of the season begins at 9 a.m.
For many more events and happenings this week and in the weeks to come, check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for regular updates.
This weekend, the Vineyard holds its first-ever Pride Weekend, courtesy of the Oak Bluffs Business Association. The biggest events are the Pride Parade (Saturday, 3 p.m., Island Queen Ferry Dock) and the Drag Show Brunch (Sunday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Oyster Bar 02557), but music will fill the air across the weekend. The Parade ends with a special performance by Funktapuss in Ocean Park, and The Ritz Cafe is hosting bands, DJs and performers to kick off and close out the weekend.
Celebrate the best the Island has to offer and kick off the summer party season at the same time with the 2022 Best of the Vineyard Party. More festive than ever, this year’s BOV includes a raw bar by the Clambulance, live music by the Vine Shakers, Salty Snapshots photobooth, drinks, prizes and of course the awards ceremony, all at Farm Neck Cafe starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15. You’ll want to know who won best massage therapist, best sandwich maker, or best home goods store! Buy your tickets here.
The West Tisbury Farmers’ Market begins on Saturday, June 11 at the Ag Society grounds. The vendors will set up in a slightly new location this year — where the vendors usually set up for the Ag Fair (as opposed to in the field). The parking entrance will be the same, but signs will direct you to a new parking area as well. The Wednesday market will begin on June 15. Both markets run from 9 a.m to noon through the end of October.
If you’d prefer some quiet time outside and on the water, head for Felix Neck on Monday, June 13 at 6:45 p.m. for its monthly Moonrise Kayak Tour around Sengekontacket Pond. Felix Neck is also hosting a special Marine Discovery Tour aboard legendary Oak Bluffs boat The Skipper on Tuesday evening, June 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
While you’re registering for those events, take a look at Felix Neck’s newly announced summer programs: it’s a full calendar of climate change walksanimal encountersbird walks, and more.
Over at Polly Hill Arboretum, you could try Forest Bathing on Saturday, June 11 at 9 a.m. or Botanical Sketching and Nature Journaling at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, June 12. Visit the plant sale while you’re at the arboretum to pick up native plants well-suited to your Vineyard yard.
Re-charge your batteries after this weekend, because next weekend is Juneteenth Jubilee MV, an exciting celebration that includes film screenings, author talks, social gatherings, historic dedications and more for this inaugural event commemorating the effective end of slavery on June 19, 1865.
Purchase your tickets now for Seeking Freedom: Martha’s Vineyard and Escape from Slavery, a special presentation by eminent historians, including Dr. Cheryl LaRoche, author of Free Black Communities and the Underground Railroad: The Geography of Resistance. The event begins at 10 a.m at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum.
