Picture Perfect Weekend: Island Time, Memorial Day Weekend

Welcome to the official kickoff of summer on Martha’s Vineyard. The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar is packed, so be sure to stay tuned to Island Time for all the highlights. Memorial Day weekend brings the return of the Vineyard Artisans Festival, gallery openings, the start of Grace Church Lobster Rolls, the first day of the Oak Bluffs Open Market, Memorial Day observances, and much more (see below).

It’s a Tradition
Start your weekend off with a lobster roll from Grace Episcopal Church in Vineyard Haven, back for the summer starting this Friday, May 27. Order ahead online or by phone. Pickup between 3 and 6:30 p.m.
At the Vineyard Artisans Memorial Day Festival at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury, you’ll find unique pieces of furniture, sculpture, clothing, jewelry and ceramics, all handmade by Island artists. Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Annual Memorial Day Town Picnic is back at the Tisbury Waterworks on Monday, May 30. Games, boating, live music and free ice cream. The fun begins at noon on West Spring street.
Let There Be Art
Opening this week are the Alison Shaw Gallery in Oak Bluffs on Friday, May 27 and Cousen Rose Gallery in Oak Bluffs on Saturday, May 28. Take a stroll around the Arts District.
You could also head to the Edgartown Harbor, where the Old Sculpin Gallery is opening the season with Colors for Ukraine, an exhibit featuring works by some of its members; all proceeds from sales will be donated to World Central Kitchen to support food relief for people in Ukraine. Meet the artists at an opening reception on Sunday, May 29 at 5 p.m.
The Martha’s Vineyard Museum salutes Stan Murphy in what would have been his hundredth year. Murphy’s oil paintings are distinct, with deeply rich colors and vivid depictions of the transitions of Island life over the 50-year span in which he worked. The exhibit Stan Murphy at 100 opens on Saturday, May 28 and runs through August 21.
Stepping in Their Shoes
Students from the Tisbury School, Edgartown School and Chilmark School will all honor Memorial Day through their annual March to the Sea on Friday, May 27. Chilmark students will make their way to Dutcher Dock via Station Menemsha starting at 9 a.m. In Vineyard Haven, Owen Park is the destination, where kids are expected to arrive around 1 p.m. Edgartown students will float their memorial tributes at Memorial Wharf. They depart Edgartown School about 1 p.m.
The American Legion Post 257 in Vineyard Haven will host its annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 30. The parade steps off from the post at 10:30 a.m. and proceeds to Oak Grove Cemetery.
More Highlights
The Nature as Inspiration Environmental Film Festival runs today, Thursday, May 26, through Sunday, May 29 at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center. Highlights include Last of The Right Whales at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Dr. Michael Moore, from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, will lead a post-screening discussion with director Nadine Pequeneza.
Starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 29, the Oak Bluffs Open Market will fill Washington Park with music, Island-grown produce, handmade crafts and specialty foods. This open air festival will be in place every Sunday through early October.
Polly Hill Arboretum’s annual plant sale opens on Saturday, May 28, and will continue daily through the summer, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Saturday, staff will be on hand until 2 p.m. to answer questions.
