Open for Business: Island Time, April 7

April 10, 2022

Everybody’s excited about spring on the Island for different reasons. For some, it’s the annual opening of Dairy Queen that does it! For others, it’s the reopening of restaurants or the return of live music. For runners and walkers, road races and guided tours are back. The first community art show of the year, Joyful Geometrics, is opening on Sunday at Featherstone. Cooks and gardeners have virtual classes (gravel gardening) and talks (bagels anyone?) to attend. Follow your passion or try something new — you can find all the opportunities in The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar. And check out a few of our picks below.

Beginning Sunday, April 10 and running through Sunday, May 1, an exhibit of work by Island artists called Joyful Geometrics will be on display at Featherstone Center for the Arts. The show features circular suns and moons, triangular trees and stars, rectangular homes and barns, all presented in various media and from the representational to the abstract. Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. daily.
The Martha’s Vineyard Figure Skating Club presents its 33rd annual ice show, Live, Love SKATE!, featuring an array of skaters performing at varying levels. Performances will be at the Martha’s Vineyard Ice Arena (91 Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road in Oak Bluffs) on Friday, April 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, April 9 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The Kids Trout Derby, presented by The Martha’s Vineyard Rod & Gun Club, is back and marking its 45thyear! The event — free for kids up to age 14 — begins at first light (5:45 a.m.) on Saturday, April 9 at Duarte’s Pond off Lambert’s Cove in West Tisbury. Hot dogs, doughnuts, coffee and hot chocolate will be available.
Walk the trails at Long Point Wildlife Refuge on a guided plant walk led by a Trustees of Reservations educator. On Sunday, April 10 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the tour will provide an overview of the area’s natural history while helping you learn to identify tree buds and other early signs of springon the Island. All skill levels welcome.
Membership Down — a no-holds-barred live in-person variety game show — will be at The Cardboard Box in Oak Bluffs on April 13 at 7 p.m. Three contestants risk it all for the chance to win money for their favorite Island charity. Hosted by Abby Bender and Molly Coogan.
