Chasing the Sun: Island Time, March 10

March 10, 2022
Have you heard the good news? On Sunday, March 13, the sun will set at 6:46 p.m. That’s right, Daylight Savings is upon us! And as our days get longer and longer, the countdown towards spring becomes shorter and shorter (there have even been reports of pinkletinks!). Celebrate the time change by soaking up that extra hour of sunlight: Take the kids on a Self-Guided Gnome Hunt at Polly Hill, download the Trustees of Reservations property map and begin to track your hikes, or pick up some takeout and watch the sun set.
With the soon-to-be shift in season, the calendar is filling up with more and more events – and many will be in-person now that the indoor mask mandate has been lifted. Below are a few highlights for the upcoming week, but you can always check out The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for all of the happenings on the Island for this week and beyond.
Join the Vineyard Conservation Society (VCS) for a Winter Walk of the Moshup Trail Headlands in Aquinnah on Saturday, March 12 at 10 a.m. The route will feature several protected parcels of land. Registration is required, with priority given to VCS members.
Ninety years ago – on March 11, 1932 – the beloved heath hen, Booming Ben, was last seen on the Island. To commemorate the anniversary of the heath hen’s extinction, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum in Vineyard Haven is having a Heath Hen Day on Saturday, March 12 from noon to 4 p.m. There will be hands-on activities celebrating the unusual bird, as well as information on how to help protect other endangered species from meeting the same fate as the heath hen.
If you’ve been missing out on live music, this week gives you nine opportunities to hear some of the Island’s best performers. On Saturday, March 12 at 3 p.m., the Jeremy Berlin Triowill be at the Edgartown Public Library. And on Sunday, March 13 at 2 p.m., the Music Street musicians will perform a concert titled Music Without Borders at the West Tisbury Public Library. For more of a nightlife vibe, check out acts at Offshore Ale, The Cardboard Box, and the PA Club.
Artists Walker T. Roman and Kristin Texeira share the PathwaysARTS Gallery space in Chilmark to showcase their contemporary mixed media work. View the exhibit Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through April 24. And catch their Artist Talk on Sunday, March 13 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the gallery. The talk will be both in-person and available on Zoom.
