Song of the Season: Island Time, February 10

Song of the Season: Island Time, February 10

February 10, 2022
If you listen carefully, there is music everywhere. Not just in the wind coursing through the oaks or the icy waves breaking up in the harbor. Not just in the caw-caw of crows or the hoots and cries of full-moon owls. But also on stage and on screen. Friday night, Johnny Hoy and The Bluefish play at the P.A. Club at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Jeremy Berlin and Shelagh Hackett headline Love is All You Need at the Edgartown Library (3 p.m.), and Rigoletto is the featured opera on screen at the Film Center (12:55 p.m.).
There are Little Bird music classes for kids at Polly Hill Arboretum on Thursday morning and The Music & Memory Cafe for elders on Friday morning. And more live performances from The McMahon Brothers, The Edbury All-Stars, and Serendipity throughout the weekend. So just when you thought it was all about football and Valentines, the Island comes up singing!
Enjoy — and remember this one thing before you take your Valentine out to dinner on Monday: Find out which restaurants are open (and closed) on What’s Open Martha’s Vineyard. Check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for more things to do.
Onions may not be the first thing home gardeners think to grow, but they’re super rewarding — especially if started from seed. Join vegetable farmer Ethan from Grey Barn at 5 p.m. tonight at the Ag Hall in West Tisbury for a class called All About Onions, and take home your own planted onion seeds. Registration is required.
The Edgartown Public Library has Drop-In Valentine’s Day Card Making for kids on Thursday, February 10 through Saturday, February 12 during their open hours. A Valentine’s Day-themed take-home craft kit is also available.
And at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum in Vineyard Haven, kids have two opportunities to take home an ARTifact kit featuring Sailors’ Valentines (each kit comes with instructions, a kid-friendly historical background and all materials needed). Pre-registration is required for pick up on Saturday, February 12 and Sunday, February 13.
No matter the season, Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury offers something of beauty. Join a Polly Hill staff member on Saturday, February 12 from 10 to 11 a.m. for a Winter Walk, where they will highlight unique foliage color, textures, berries and more. Registration is required.
The Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse’s monthly poetry series — renamed Arnie’s Poetry Cafe in honor of the late MV Poet Laureate Arnie Reisman — will take place on Wednesday, February 16 at 6 p.m. in the Marilyn Meyerhoff Lobby. It will feature guest host Clark Myers with fellow poets Maureen D. Hall, Delilah Hammarlund and Donald Nitchie. Pre-registration is required.
