The Eleventh Hour: Island Time, Nov. 11

November 17, 2021
Today the Vineyard honors its military veterans with a ceremony at Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs, beginning at 11 a.m. The Veterans Day federal holiday occurs on the same day and at the same time every year, because it was originally created to mark the end of World War I, which took place on the 11thhour of the 11th day of the 11th month. It’s a good day to pause and thank all the men and women who have served our country over the years.
Soon we’ll be gearing up for the holidays. Two holiday markets open up this weekend, and there’s plenty more to do, from live theater (it’s back!) to cooking classes, film and music. Read on and remember the The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar has a complete listing of events and activities.
Cabaret performers return to the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse in Vineyard Haven for a Wicked Good Musical Revue on Friday, November 12 and Saturday, November 13 at 7 p.m., and on Sunday, November 14 at 2 p.m. Featured performers will be David Behnke, Molly Conole, Jenny Friedman, Katherine Reid and Ken Romero. Proof of vaccination and masks will be required.
Head to Long Point Wildlife Refuge in West Tisbury for Duck Day on Sunday, November 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Plenty to do for the kids —crafts, activities, a scavenger hunt and more — and a beautiful spot to hang out too. Advance pre-registration is strongly recommended.
Learn tips and strategies for successful composting during Island Grown Initiative’s Backyard Composting from A-Z class on Saturday, November 13 from noon to 1:30 p.m. The hands-on workshop at Thimble Farm (a.k.a. Island Grown Initiative’s farm) in Vineyard Haven will show you what to compost, what containers to use and effective ways you can use the finished product. Email [email protected] to sign up.
You watched chef Jenny Devivo on The Great Food Truck Race, now you can learn how to cook from her. On Friday, November 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Farm Institute in Edgartown, chef Devivo will lead a Seasonal Suppers class for adults.
And for future chefs, ages 12 to 18, she’ll teach a Teens Can Cook class on Saturday, November 13 from 1 to 3 p.m., also at the Farm Institute. Pre-registration is required for both classes.
The holidays are just around the corner, so why not get a jump on shopping? Today, Thursday, November 11, the World Market Holiday Pop-Up Shopopens inside the Capawock Theatre in Vineyard Haven. You can purchase handmade artisan products, art, textiles and more daily, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., through December 24.
Over at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs, their annual Holiday Gift Show opens on Friday, November 12 and features paintings, photography, pottery, jewelry and more from Island artists. The show is open daily from noon to 4 p.m. through December 16, and you must book a time slot to visit.
