Spooky Season

Spooky Season

November 3, 2021
Put those finishing touches on your costumes – or maybe finally settle on one! – because Halloween is here. And the calendar is chock full of events this weekend for people of all ages. Kids: the various libraries are the place to be with early Trick or Treating, a Halloween Party and even a Spooky Gazebo. And for everyone else: the West Tisbury Parks and Recreation team will have their annual Halloween Party at the Ag Hall featuring a hayride. For more haunted happenings, read on.
Of course there are also non-Halloween-themed events going on this week. Visit The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for a full list. Hoping to eat out? Find out which restaurants are serving in What’s Open on Martha’s Vineyard.
Kids looking to show off their costumes should head to Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs on Saturday, October 30 from 1 to 4 p.m. for Halloween in OB. There will be a costume parade/contest (with various prizes awarded), a Great Pumpkin contest, and, of course, trick or treating.
On Sunday, October 31 in downtown Edgartown, the annual Happy Haunting event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Other happenings in town include Tricks & Treats (11 a.m. to noon) for pet lovers and a Halloween Kids Party (2 to 6 p.m.) at EthosMV. On Vineyard Haven’s Main Street from 2 to 5 p.m., there will be even more Trick or Treatingto be enjoyed.
The fifth annual Island Lore story-telling open mic takes place on Friday, October 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum in Vineyard Haven. High school seniors will read historical fiction they have written based on the Museum’s collections, and prizes will be awarded for the best-told tales.
Adults looking for an actual scare this weekend should stop by the Haunted Warehouse in Vineyard Haven on Saturday, October 30 and Sunday, October 31 – both from 6 to 11 p.m.
Or maybe a spooky film is a better option. The Martha’s Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven will show Possession on Sunday, October 31 at 7:30 p.m. Be sure to come in costume – there will be a cash prize for the best one!
Fall is the perfect time to get out and explore. Bring the kids to Menemsha Hills in Chilmark for a StoryWalk. Or maybe you’ve always wanted to take a Guided Arboretum Tour of Polly Hill in West Tisbury – today, Thursday, October 28, gives you two chances at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.
In Edgartown, Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary is offering an “Awakening” Poetry Walk, which features a collection of work by naturalist EM Degenis. And in Chilmark, the Island Folk Pottery Sculpture Trail –created by Island artists Bill O’Callaghan and Heather Goff – is an enchanting experience for all ages.
Trivia buffs will be happy to know that there are now two opportunities on Tuesday nights to challenge other locals on their knowledge of random facts. At The Ritz in Oak Bluffs, starting at 7:30 p.m., Trivia is hosted by Johnny Showtime. And in Edgartown at Town Bar & Grill, also at 7:30 p.m., host DJ Dyno Mike will be doling out questions.
