By Day or By Night: Island Time, October 7

By Day or By Night: Island Time, October 7

October 7, 2021
A long weekend stretches ahead with a holiday capping it off on Monday. The weather gurus tell us to watch for a mix of sun and clouds, to expect warm days and chilly nights. We’ll take it all – market shopping, farm tours and fun runs by day; drive-in movies, Met Opera live and the latest James Bond by night (or afternoon!). The sun sets at 6:07 on Monday night, so get your sunshine in. Pick out your pumpkin, make an apple crisp, stock up on fall’s best new books – and shop local, whatever you do. Who doesn’t love a good fall weekend on the Vineyard?!
Hey, don’t forget: You can find all upcoming events and activities in The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar.
Friday, October 8, from 4 to 7 p.m., the Winter Street Gallery in Edgartown premiers its last art show of the season. The show – entitled Exhibition – will feature work by Ellen Berkenblit, Jim Lambie and David Shrigley.
Also on Friday, from 3 to 4 p.m., meet artist Peter Batchelder (painting above) at the Louisa Gould Gallery in Vineyard Haven, where the Fresh for Fall exhibit has new work arriving daily.
Everyone is invited to join Sassafras Earth Education and the Aquinnah Cultural Center for the first annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary in Edgartown from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, October 11. Highlights will include speakers, drumming, music, storytelling and more.
The Vineyard Artisans Columbus Day Weekend Festival takes place at the Grange Hall on Saturday, October 9 and Sunday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Browse booths featuring pottery, sculptures, clothing, photography and more.
Local author Thomas Dresser – who wrote the 2020 book Ghosts of Martha’s Vineyard – will lead a Cemetery Tour through the Oak Grove Cemetery in Oak Bluffs on Saturday, October 9 from 10 to 11 a.m. Along the way, folks will “meet” local historic figures and hear a ghost story or two.
Want to learn how to forage for mushrooms on the Island? Then the Weekend Wanderer Mushroom Walk, on Sunday, October 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., is for you. Join Wesley Price, founder of the Cape Cod Mycological Society, as he leads an educational walk of Menemsha Hills in Chilmark, pointing out mushrooms that can be safely harvested along the way. Advance registration is required.

Hello!
Maybe it’s the string of gray days we had earlier in the week, but I feel like watching some things. You too? Some suggestions:
The Vineyard Drive-In at the ice arena has a stellar line-up for its Fall Mini Fest this weekend. If you’ve blown through The Crown, The Windsors, and all related documentary spin-offs, and still you can’t get enough of the royals, check out Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana, on Friday at 7 p.m.; on Saturday it’s The Humans at 8:30 p.m., Amy Schumer’s latest, also starring Jayne Houdyshell, a very good actor with a very good name. For full schedule see here; it may be worth parking for the weekend with a trunk full of snacks and not leaving. (I’m sure that’s frowned upon, but sounds fun, right?)
I’d also like to see Language Lessons starring Mark Duplass, at the MV Film Center. (I can also recommend The Chair on Netflix, starring Mark’s brother, Jay, my preferred Duplass — in case you’re keeping track.)
Also on Netflix you’ll find Maid, a newly released limited series based on the memoir by Stephanie Land. And it’s also where you’ll find Squid Game, if you haven’t already, though apparently unless you’re fluent in Korean you won’t be getting the full (twisted) story.
What am I missing? Please direct any and all recommendations to @oystermv on Instagram, or email me hereYes, we’ll all enjoy the sun while it’s shining, but it never hurts to be prepared.
