Dive In: Island Time and The Oyster, July 22

July 22, 2021
The water is cool, the sand is warm, the beach is calling. Grab your sunscreen, because we’re going all outdoors this weekend. Beach Road Weekend is on in Veterans Park and tickets are still available. On Friday night we’ll eat our Grace Church Lobster Rolls in Owen Park and we’ll hit the Chilmark Flea and the Farmers’ Market Saturday morning before the beach. At the end of the weekend, we’ll tune into the Possible Dreams auction livestream, hosted by Seth Meyers. The benefit for MV Community Services is one of our favorite ways of giving back to the Island.
For more things to do in the coming week, read on. Then be sure to check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for a complete listing of events.
Beach Road Weekend is here! Although Saturday’s show is sold out, tickets are still available for Friday, July 23, which features the band moe. and for Sunday, July 25, which features Tedeschi Trucks. Both shows start at 6 p.m. at Veterans Park in Vineyard Haven.
And the music plays on all summer long at The Loft in Oak Bluffs, where the MV Concert Series – the sister of Beach Road Weekend – will have smaller-scale shows. This weekend features Pink Talking Fish tonight at 9 p.m., Marble Eyes on Friday, July 23 at 10 p.m. and moe. on Saturday, July 24 and Sunday, July 25 – also at 10 p.m. each night.
Tonight at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs, join the Martha’s Vineyard Diversity Coalition, along with Kyle Williams of A Long Talk, to take a stand and rally to eradicate racism on Martha’s Vineyard and across the United States. The talk, titled Ally or Abolitionist?, begins at 7 p.m.
Kew-trained gardener, photographer and author Christin Geall makes an appearance at Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury on Saturday, July 24 for a Floral Design Demonstration from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Participants will watch her create a foam-free statement piece using Island-grown branches and blooms. Plus, she will share strategies for working with color and sign copies of her book Cultivated: The Elements of Floral Style.
In honor of the Vineyard Gazette‘s 175th anniversary this year, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum in Vineyard Haven is highlighting the paper in an exhibit titled Tomorrow’s History: 175 Years of the Vineyard Gazette. Opening to the public on Saturday, July 24 and running through Sunday, October 24, the exhibit will use objects from both the museum and the Gazette to bring to life some of the Island’s most notable stories.
Well-known Island designer Stina Sayre is having a fashion show at her Vineyard Haven storefront showcasing her 2021 Freedom Collectionon Wednesday, July 28 at 5:30 p.m. Proceeds from the show will be shared by MV Friends of Family Planning and the National Institute for Reproductive Health. Tickets can be purchased at her store on Main Street or by calling 508-693-5180.
Yikes!
Has it been a week already? Does anyone else feel like time in July moves at warp speed?
Some events and offerings to slow down for:
Seaweed’s has a full roster of pop-ups, dance parties and guest chefs this month. Tonight (Thursday) brings Brooklyn-based chef Zacarias Gonzales to the kitchen; next week look for pop-ups from Good Peirogi and The Swimming Pig. (Find tickets and event details on Instagram @Seaweeds_MV.)
Sit back on the porch of Oak Bluffs’ Narangansett House for Inkwell Talks. This Saturday’s talk features Island author Mathea Morais discussing her (excellent) book There You Are, all about growing up in the ’80s and ‘90s and falling in love to the sounds of Prince and A Tribe Called Quest.
Speaking of quests: If you missed it earlier this summer, you’ll want to see Summer of Soul, Questlove’s music documentary celebrating the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. (Some are calling it the best concert film ever made.)
And if you’re on the hunt for a new podcast, have a listen to Shed, Conversations about Race with Island therapist Eric Adams. The show features interviews with Islanders in the wake of the George Floyd killing and protests, produced by Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer and brought to you by the Vineyard Gazette.
At the very least, find yourself an ocean. Be it a swim, a dip, a soak or a dunk; we all move at the right pace underwater.
