Island Time, November 5 – 11: Seeking Light

November 5, 2020

These lengthening nights make daylight adventures all the more precious. Thankfully, there’s plenty of the great outdoors to share on Martha’s Vineyard, along with big-screen movies, museum exhibits and live-on-Zoom music for when it’s time to head indoors. Find all your options in the Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar.

This is a beautiful time of year for a walk at Polly Hill Arboretum, and you can take advantage of socially-distanced guided tours on Thursday mornings at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Pre-registration is required. Or visit the arboretum for a self-guided tour any day between sunrise and sunset.
The acclaimed Metropolitan Opera production of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess—its first in nearly 30 years—screens Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven.
Saturday’s socially-distanced community Walk/Run for Veterans, starting at 9 a.m. from the South Beach Right Fork parking lot on Atlantic Drive in Edgartown, supports the MV Community Services Veterans Outreach Program and honors Island veterans.
See and hear the didgeridoo as never before on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. when Rob Thomas of Didgeridoo Down Under live-streams a performance mixing funky rhythms, percussion and relaxing soundscapes with both organic and electronic sound effects—plus visuals that take you from Australian forests to distant galaxies.
Need to get away from it all? Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the 1/4 mile Island Folk Pottery Sculpture Trail in Chilmark takes you on a meandering journey through a magical landscape populated with whimsical sculptures created by artists Bill O’Callaghan and Heather Goff.
