Island Time, October 15-21: The Art of Fall

October 15, 2020

Do you have your pumpkins yet? Your gourds? Your mums? This would be a perfect weekend to visit Island nurseries and farm stands, which are all stocked up for fall decorating (and cooking). While you’re out, why not visit the Island Folk Pottery Sculpture Trail or check out the Trustees of Reservations’ new Brickyard walking trail in Menemsha. Then watch a film, see an art show, or participate in a host of virtual events, all detailed in The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar. Here are some highlights.

Martha’s Vineyard Museum’s outdoor concert series continues tonight with performances by four singer-songwriters: Phil daRosa, Maryse Smith, David Saw and Darby Patterson. The concert begins at 5:30 p.m. and reservations are required.
The Women in Film Festival kicks off Friday at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center with Snaeland at 4 p.m. and Touch at 7:30 p.m. An all-access online pass is also available for the six films in the festival.
The Martha’s Vineyard Film Festivalcontinues this weekend at the Vineyard Drive-in behind the Ice Arena in Oak Bluffs, with The Boy From Medellin Friday at 7 p.m. Buy tickets ahead.
You’ll want to visit the West Tisbury Library’s virtual art gallery through Oct. 29 for a show of art through the seasons by these eight Vineyard artists: Dale Weymouth Julier, Ruth Kirchmeier, Wenonah Madison, Diana Rice, Judith Drew Schubert, Lizzy Schule, Elizabeth Taft and Katy Upson.
Another good reason to visit the Film Center is a new show of Eisner award-winning cartoonist Paul Karasik’s work at the Feldman Family Art Space, co-sponsored by Featherstone Center for the Arts.
Some of his cartoons from The New Yorker will be on display, as well as many of his Vineyard-themed cartoons. Karasik is a regular contributor to Martha’s Vineyard magazine and the Vineyard Gazette. A socially distanced reception, open to the public, will be held on Saturday, October 17th from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
At last, a great excuse to head to Back Door Donuts for a treat: On Saturday, October 17 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., 30 percent of all sales will benefit Sandy Paws Rescue in a fundraiser called Donut to Donate. Information on adopting pets will be available. Leashed dogs are welcome.
