Island Time, September 10-16: September Song

September 10, 2020

This is the time Islanders wait for all year: sweet September, when life begins to move at an easier pace, the water is still warm enough to swim and the sunlight casts a special late-summer glow. And this weekend, the Derby begins! Check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendarfor everything that’s happening on the Island, and consider these picks for the days to come.

Have fun playing with color and pattern while you make your own “concertina” (accordion) book with round pages and an origami cover at the workshop called A Round About Book, Saturday, September 12, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Seastone Papers in West Tisbury.
Salute the season with a yoga session on the beach by Long Cove Pond with YogiJay, a.k.a. Jason Mazer-Kelly, this Monday (September 14) and next Monday (September 21) from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Long Point Wildlife Refuge in West Tisbury.
The Wednesday West Tisbury Farmers’ Market may be done for the season, but you can still shop the market on Saturdays at the Ag Hall from 9 a.m. to noon.
And there’s more good news: The market is planning to continue its successful run outside at the Ag Hall beyond the end of September and through the month of October, pending approval from West Tisbury selectmen.
The Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festivalcontinues through the weekend with showings of House of Hummingbird, Days of the Whale, Daughter of Mine and more. The films are showing at the theater and an all-access pass for viewing online is available, too.
Turning 75 this year, the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby opens for competition at one minute past midnight Sunday morning (September 13), with socially distanced weigh-ins from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily through Oct. 17.
