Island Time, September 3 – 9: In the Swim

September 4, 2020

Whether by board or by boat – or just by yourself – you must hit the water this long weekend while it is still officially summer. Go swimming or sailing, but just go. Dry off and pick sunflowers, take in an art show, or listen to live music: The PickPocket Bluegrass Band performs tonight at 5 p.m. on the lawn of the Museum, rescheduled from last Thursday. We’ve got a few more ideas for you here, but remember you can find all your options on The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar.

Pick Your Own

It’s time to pick sunflowers at the FARM Institute. Their one-acre field is bursting with blooms and all you have to do is reserve a time slot to go picking Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. (One group is allowed every half-hour). Clippers and buckets are provided for picking, as well as rubber bands for carrying your flowers home.
Good news for gardeners, tree lovers, and anyone who wants to spend time in a beautiful outdoor space: Polly Hill Arboretum has started up its guided tours again, with new precautions in place, including advance registration and smaller groups. Tours will happen on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. to noon in September.
See the Vineyard through the artistic eyes of AIRE MV, the Island’s plein air painting group, in their annual show at the Old Sculpin Gallery in Edgartown this week. To create these new images, the eight painters fanned out across the Vineyard earlier this summer to capture their favorite views. You can visit the gallery or view and shop online.
You might catch some good deals at the Fisherman’s Tag Sale, sponsored by MV Surfcasters, where all manner of fishing gear—rods, reels and boat and shore tackle for all levels, will be on sale Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.
The annual Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival kicks off Tuesday, both online and in person at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven. Executive director Richard Paradise has a knack for picking new movies from around the world: Last year’s festival closer, Parasite, went on to win six Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director.
