Island Time, August 27 – Sept. 2: In Full Swing
August 27, 2020
How to spend the last days of August on Martha’s Vineyard? In between trips to the beach, lazy afternoons and moonlit evenings with the sound of crickets in the air, there’s a lively panorama of concerts, art shows and other events taking place on Island and online. The 31st is also the last day for the online Chicken Alley Art & Collectibles sale, which benefits Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. Shop and buy with your choice of shipping (extra) or pick-up.
The lawn of the Martha’s Vineyard Museum in Vineyard Haven is turning into one of the best places on the Island to hear live music. Thursday at 5 p.m., the Vineyard’s own PickPocket Bluegrass Band performs on the porch for socially distanced listening. (Masks required.)
Former New Yorker cartoon editor Bob Mankoff speaks on Jewish humor and shares some of his favorite cartoons in Bob Mankoff: Stand Up for Cartoons, Saturday at 4:30 p.m. on Zoom during the virtual Martha’s Vineyard Jewish Book Festival.
Sunday’s Chappy Point to Point, the five-mile road race that usually takes runners from Wasque to the ferry landing, will look a bit different this year. To meet state Covid-19 guidelines, the race will start and end at Chappy Point, instead of shuttling runners to the starting line at Wasque Point. The event also will have a rolling start, with no more than 25 runners at a time starting at 15-minute intervals.
Instead of a Tuesday movie at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs this week, a 6 p.m. lawn concert features the lively music of Boston-based pan-Latin ensemble Sol y Canto with Alisa Amador, who is the daughter of founding members Brian and Rosi Amador.
