Porch Music and Pop-Ups

Porch Music and Pop-Ups

August 20, 2020

While events like the Ag Fair have moved to the internet this summer, other Island activities are taking place in 3-D, including hikes, live music and a Chilmark Chocolates reunion pop-up. Saturday afternoon, you might also glimpse red-clad dancers taking part in the Built on Stilts flash mob at 3 p.m. The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar is packed with live and virtual activities for the week to come; here are our top picks.

All’s Fair

Miss the fair? Find it online: The Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society is holding a virtual Ag Fair through Sunday, with a T-shirt and poster shack, music tent, awards and an auction with many tantalizing items up for bidding and buy-now options as well.

Ann Clare LeZotte’s new novel Show Me a Sign brings to life an overlooked time in Martha’s Vineyard history, when deaf people formed a significant part of the community and even hearing Islanders learned sign language along with English. The deaf author will discuss her book on Zoom Thursday at 5 p.m., hosted by the Aquinnah Public Library.

Music on the Porch

Musical Island couple Sean and Siren McMahon, who have been performing online since March, are playing a pair of socially distanced concerts on the porch of the Narragansett House in Oak Bluffs, Friday and next Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Chocolatier Reunion

Former staffers of Chilmark Chocolates are gathering on the grounds of the now-closed shop on State Road Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a pop-up celebrating the beloved Island institution. Benefiting the Vineyard Independence Partnership, an alliance of people with disabilities, their families and friends, Chilmark Chocolates T-shirts and mugs will be for sale along with arts and crafts by VIP members—but no chocolate.

Brickyard Hike

Postponed from last weekend, Sunday’s three-mile Long Brickyard Hike explores the newly opened grounds of the Island’s historic brickworks by way of a freshly cut trail at the Menemsha Hills Reservation in Chilmark. The hike begins at 10 a.m. and runs to 1 p.m. Wear comfortable shoes.
