Island Time, August 13-18: Diving into August

August 13, 2020

Even at the height of summer, you’ve got to come off the beach some time. Fortunately we’re on Martha’s Vineyard, where there are plenty of alternatives such as hands-on (but socially distanced) art classes, intriguing virtual talks with scholars, journalists and leaders, hikes through Island landscapes and this week’s 100th-anniversary celebration of the Constitutional amendment granting women the right to vote. You’ll find all your options in the Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar

…The Chicken Alley Art & Collectibles sale, that is! The annual blockbuster that in a normal year would have customers lined up at the door is now online through August 31. The sale is a kaleidoscope of Island images, traditional and modern artwork, jewelry, ceramics, glass and more. You might even land an old Fair poster.
Summer speakers are a Martha’s Vineyard tradition that continues on virtual platforms this summer. Thursday, August 13, at 7:30 p.m. you can choose between the 2020 MV Author Series panel discussion on The Black Lives Matter Movement and the Fight for Social Justice (free) and former New Orleans Mayor, Louisiana lieutenant governor and state representative Mitch Landrieu speaking on How Cities will Lead: Climate Change, Resilience & Equity as part of the Hebrew Center’s Summer Institute speaker series ($25).
In Monday’s beginners ceramics class, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs, Debbie Hale teaches the techniques to create forms on the potter’s wheel – cups, bowls, vessels, etc. You will learn the basics of the pottery studio, wheel throwing, glazing and firing.
Tour the historic Edgartown waterfront, experience architecture from the 18th to the 20th century or follow the paths of famous authors and illustrators on one of the Vineyard Trust’s guided walking tours. Taking place Tuesday through Friday throughout the day, they depart from the Trust’s centrally-located Carnegie building on North Water Street.
The League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard holds a gathering Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Five Corners in Vineyard Haven, celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote. Wearing white and a sash, and carrying a sign, are encouraged.
