The fair and fireworks are over, but there’s plenty of August left! Here are five things to do this week—find more in the Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar.
Susanna Styron directs a reading of this new play by J.B Miller, in which the reclusive daughter of a notorious artist must either banish her ghosts or live with them for the rest of her life. In the lobby art space, painter Bettie Eubanks has a new show called Living in Harmony.
2. Exhibit Opening: Face Value, Portraits from the 21st Century, Tuesday, August 20, 5 p.m., Martha’s Vineyard Museum, Vineyard Haven
West Tisbury’s Dan Waters uses a traditional large-format camera to capture detailed black-and-white images. On display through Nov. 24, the larger-than-life portraits will then be placed in the museum’s climate-controlled vault, where some day they may provide the best remaining clues of who we were.
Cucumbers are abundant in our fields, and in this workshop you will turn them into lacto-fermented pickles. Learn about the health benefits of fermented foods, and how to preserve seasonal harvests. Excess vegetables in your garden? Bring them along and pickle them, too!
All ages are welcome to dance, from kids to great-grandparents. The chairs in the Tabernacle will be pushed back to make room on the floor for everyone to move to musical hits from throughout the eras. The free dance is co-sponsored by MVYRadio and the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association.
Livingston Taylor’s annual concert at the Whaling Church is always a joy for his fans and anyone who loves great singing and songwriting. Younger brother of James, Kate and Hugh Taylor, Livingston has crafted his own career, recording 20 albums with five Billboard-charting singles.
