Island Time 2, July 1-4: Glorious July

Flags are flying and the Fourth of July is Thursday. We’ll be back later in the week to let you know more about holiday activities, but in the meantime, enjoy these five terrific things to do on Martha’s Vineyard this week. And check out the complete Gazette calendar for more activities.
1. The new play Sid & Howard has a reading, Monday, July 1, 7:30 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse in Vineyard Haven. This antic comedy brings together two of Rhode Island’s greatest literary characters, the witty and satirical S.J. Perelman (he wrote for the Marx Brothers and New Yorker magazine) and master of horror H.P. Lovecraft, along with the mystery woman who changed Lovecraft’s life.
2. Drumming on the Beach returns, Tuesday, July 2, 6:30 p.m., Joseph A. Sylvia State Beach, Edgartown. Bring a picnic, wear some tie-dye and enjoy the music the drums in one of the Vineyard’s most beloved summer traditions. Park near the Jabberwocky (handicapped) entrance to the beach. This event happens weekly through August.
3. The Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival presents The Farewell, Wednesday, July 3, 8 p.m., Chilmark Community Center. Comedian Awkwafina stars in this multi-generational family comedy. Come at 6:30 for a pre-show dinner by Jan Buhrman of Kitchen Porch Catering, served on the lawn.
4. The Childen’s Fourth of July Parade starts at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 4 at the Trinity Park Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs.
Parade participants gather on West Clinton Avenue before the start. Patriotic clothing and decorated bikes are encouraged; motorized bikes and scooters are not permitted.The parade route takes kids down West Clinton and around Trinity Circle to the MCVMA Museum.
5. Sing the National Anthem with the Vineyard Sound, 10 a.m. Thursday in downtown Edgartown. Join the Island’s premier male college a cappella choir to kick off Independence Day by singing the Star-Spangled Banner. Meet at the corner of Main street and North/South Water street for this annual community celebration of patriotism in music.MORE HOLIDAY EVENTS
