Old Whaling Church Accessibility Issues Raised

Martha’s Vineyard  –  Kathleen Samways, a physical therapist and the former Dukes County associate commissioner on disability affairs, told selectmen at their Monday meeting that the 19th-century Old Whaling Church belonging to the Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust poses accessibility barriers, including steep stairs going into the sanctuary, an unreliable elevator and poor lighting.

In the letter to the board outlining her concerns, Ms. Samways noted that she did not see any residents using wheelchairs or walkers at the town meeting this year, commenting “This does not represent a natural proportion of the population.”
