This demonstration involves the traditional methods of making a boat or dugout canoe (mishoon in the Wampanoag language)  by using fire as the main tool to shape the boat from a log.  Wampanoag people used this method for thousands of years before contact with Europeans, making boats as large as 60 feet long and wide enough to hold 2 men abreast.

Also view a short film on a mishoon trip from Falmouth on the Cape to Martha’s Vineyard, a distance of 5 miles.  Made in 2002, this trip was the first made in a traditional boat in 200 years.
