On Wednesday January 3rd, Michael Blanchard, local photographer and writer, will be at the library to give a presentation titled “Less Traveled Paths to Healing Addiction.” This program will explore the power of interpersonal connections in the healing of addiction. Blanchard will talk about the ways non-traditional means such as art therapy, imagery, photography, equine therapy, yoga and meditation can help those struggling to overcome addiction and mental health issues. Blanchard has recently joined Island Health Care in Edgartown as the Mental Health/ Substance Use Disorder (MH/SUD) Coordinator, working with Island agencies to help individuals coming through primary care, get the help they need for MH and SUD issues. In his 2014 book “Fighting for My Life,” Blanchard speaks frankly about the necessity of art as part of his own healing process, writing that “my photographs are not just pretty pictures. They are reminders to me of where I was when I took them, the hope that was in my heart, and how I want to continue living my life — sober, serene, honest.” In addition to his work with Island Health Care, Blanchard is the co-owner of Crossroads Gallery in Oak Bluffs. On the 3rd he will also be joined by Sherry Sidoti of FLY Yoga to discuss yoga and meditation in recovery and Linda Wannamaker from Rising Tide to talk about therapeutic riding.
