With the holiday season almost upon us, there is already a perceptible change in the Island’s atmosphere as the excitement and anticipation escalate. On Wednesday, November 29th the Oak Bluffs Association holds its annual tree lighting ceremony in Post Office Square where the Vineyard Brass Ensemble will fill the air with holiday music and hot chocolate will help fill the minutes before the much anticipated appearance of Santa in the OB Fire Department’s shiny green truck. Soon after, trees on the MV Hospital campus will be twinkling with lights, each representing a $25 donation in memory of a loved one, culminating in the annual lighting ceremony Wednesday, December 14, at 4 pm.
‘Tis also the season for Steamship travel, a perfect opportunity for visiting the SSA’s online Holiday Gift Store to pick up gifts sure to bring smiles. Who wouldn’t want to find a ferry merry book of tickets in his or her stocking? (While on the topic of stocking stuffers, be sure not to overlook Conroy Apothecary’s selection of soaps, scents, lotions and potions to protect from winter ills.)
Christmas In Edgartown
Some of that travel will undoubtedly be generated by the Edgartown Board of Trade’s Christmas in Edgartown weekend, December 7-10, where local businesses will be open and serving up holiday cheer in the form of hospitality, sales and special offers. Check in with Murdick’s Fudge on December 10 to sample some of their confections and stock up on hostess gifts and holiday sweets. The Martha’s Vineyard Museum will also be celebrating with events, a special exhibit of vintage holiday cards, and discounts in its gift shop.
Gifts for Foodies
Of course the holiday would hardly be complete without a spread worthy of Dickens’ Ghost of Christmas Past: For delicious and fridge-to-table appetizers, shop the Net Result’s selection of fish pates, smoked items and salads. Or surprise someone you love with a gift certificate to underwrite next summer’s lobster fest! To make entertaining even easier, the Back Porch Larder has a sumptuous selection of foods that allow you to sit back and enjoy your own celebration, or check in with Kitchen Porch Catering for a special event. For the perfect wine pairing, MV Wine and Spirits stands ready to assist with vintage advice and stronger spirits of the season. Of course you’ll want to serve all this wonderful food on the most charming holiday dishes; visit LeRoux at Home, where you can also pick up a true taste of the Vineyard: MV Sea Salt, for gift-giving to Island-bereft friends and for your own holiday table.
At Rainy Day in Vineyard Haven, you’ll find one of the best selections of holiday ornaments and gifts. Over in Oak Bluffs, The Good Ship Lollipop is your headquarters for holiday candy. Surprise nostalgia buffs on your list with an assortment of the shop’s vintage candies, bound to elicit memories of happy holidays gone by. A perfect companion present for these might be a gift selected at Edgartown’s Past and Presents where charming items from times gone by (and from the present) await.
