MV’s Gone Fishin’ – It’s Derby Time Again!

Pull on your gear, grab rod and reel, hang up the Gone Fishin’ sign and head to the shore: It’s Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby time again!

Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby

What began as an informal gathering of fishermen following the upheavals of WWII has since become an enduring tradition and fact of life on Martha’s Vineyard. Now in its 72nd year, the  Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby remains the centerpiece of events that draws the Island community together every autumn.  Beyond Island shores it has also grown to attract fisherfolk from the world over, bringing the number of participants into the thousands. From the littlest sportsmen who fish the Kid’s Derby for the first time, those who have participated for generations, and to  families of fisherfolk passing the rod and reel from generation to generation, the Derby is a rite of passage and badge of belonging for all who experience the thrill of sport-fishing.

This year, the annual event takes place from September 10 through October 14 in favored fishing spots around the Island and its surrounding waters. Derby fever is hard to resist and even those just come to observe the Derby can experience the excitement of catch weigh-ins and special events updated daily at the weigh-in stations and on the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby website.

Both Derby participants and visitors seeking the September sun will find Island accommodations, such as Vineyard Haven’s beachfront Vineyard Harbor Motel (special for Derby participants: standard rooms priced at $129/night!), ready to welcome them.  Fishing or not, having fun can work up an appetite.  In Edgartown, drop by the Covington on Main Street, just up from the harbor, for sit down dining and refreshment.  In Vineyard Haven, the Net Result, just a short jog from The Tisbury Wharf, offers chowder, sushi, sandwiches, lobster and all the trimmings to go or to ‘eat-in’ outdoors with a view of the harbor.  Cronig’s Market, just up State Road, offers prepared foods and sandwiches with which to stock your boat’s galley or picnic cooler .

For bait, gear, tackle and fish talk follow the reel crowd to Coop’s Bait & Tackle.  Boat need servicing or fuel? Edgartown’s North Wharf Fueling and Prime Marina Group in both Edgartown and Vineyard Haven stand ready to serve.  Enjoy the Derby and  Good Luck and Good Times to all!
