On Martha's Vineyard, It's Still Summer!

Autumn on Martha's Vineyard

As summer segues into fall, the lure of a Vineyard vacation is irresistable. Unlike high summer when days start too early and end too late, September lets you take it easy. Sleep late, meander out for breakfast or brunch. You'll find Mocha Motts, the Black Dog, Espresso Love or the ArtCliff Diner, among others, are all great possibilities.

Come On Out,  the Weather's Fine!
Take advantage of  some of the finest days the year has to offer by playing outdoors: Check in at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary to see what activities are being offered.  As a local branch of the Audubon Society,  they often sponsor naturalist-led kayak, walking and other expeditions. The Trustees of Reservations is another option for late summer activities.  Or, consider biking.  The three down Island town’s provide the perfect ready-made itineraries with relatively short distances (3-6 miles) between destinations, water-views and, almost, flat topography.

Autumn on Martha's Vineyard On Sale, Everywhere
In September weekend festivals, farmers markets and autumn events remain active. Mid month, The Martha's Vineyard International Film Fesitval draws hundreds of film buffs to it's amazing line-up of movies from around the world.  On Island Main streets, sale signs are everywhere and some great deals can be found especially on all sorts of seasonal stuff. For fun and a real taste of the  Island, check out the yard sales. Being a time of transition, it's now open season for 'yard saling.' Keep an eye out for the hand written ads along the roadside or check out the 'Yard Sale' ads in the local papers.

Autumn on Martha's VineyardBrowsing Bookstores, Farmstands
For those who believe ‘taking it easy’ should be just that, there are a lot of ways besides the beach to while away an afternoon. A personal favorite is to browse the second hand books at The Book Den East located on New York Ave. just outside of Oak Bluffs. Or, plan a picnic, assembling the ingredients as you explore the Island. Island farm stands are full to the bursting with late summer produce. Most offer an assortment of produce, breads, desserts, soup and more.  If you want something prepared for you, Espresso Love, Soigne (both in Edgartown) and the Waterside Market (in Vineyard Haven) all have sandwiches, salads and baked good to go.

Live Music and Dinner
As the sun sets spectacularly  and the moon rises on the horizon, you’re right on schedule for dinner and entertainment venues:  If you wanna rock, head over to Nectar's at the Airport. Check out Danny Quinn's in Oak Bluffs for live Irish music nightly.  Feeling mellow? There's jazz at the bar at Atria just outside of Edgartown. Catch motown, reggae and rock (and any of  the items on the late night bar menu for $10) at Mediterranean in Oak Bluffs. For a taste of house-made brews and local bands. stop by at Offshore Ale also in OB.  Happy relaxing!
